Almost Summer

The end of the semester is killing me right about now. Professors are all loading me down with work all at once. I mean, last week I had five papers to write, along with homework and quizzes. The last few weeks are going to be just as hard, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Only 3 or 4 more weeks left until summer. It seems like almost all of the students are ready for summer, all this schoolwork isn't really working for us.

I didn't find this article, but MC sent it to me during class the last day before break because I had trouble finding an opposing view. In the article, Malcolm Gladwell makes a point that even though social networks and other technological advances are helping with protests and making things possible that weren't possible before it is not solving a problem. I understand that Gladwell is saying that this technology, and social networks, are not solving any problems. Poeple conducted protests before the use of technology, but a lot of times protests did not have enough protesters because people did not know that the protest was going to take place. The problem is that the protest idea was not shared to enough people to make it worth while. With Facebook many people can easily be reached, which will have the number of protesters grow. The problem isn't that people can't protest without technology because they can, it's that not that many people can be reached without technology to make a large protest.

With some research I was able to see that Facebook has been used all over the world as a means of protesting. I had no idea that all these different countries have used Facebook in this way. I guess the only places that I knew used Facebook to protest was the USA and Egypt. The only reason I knew about Egypt was because it was reported so much, and had a vast amount of coverage with the media.

Age Limits?

It seems like nowadys there are not only young kids on Facebook, but old adults. I'm sure that the majority of Facebook users my age would agree with me when I say that this is ricidulous. There should be an age limit to use Facebook. Having kids that are in elementary school on Facebook takes away from it. This was written by a current TV anchor that calls herself News Anchor Mom. The article describes how kids that are younger than the age of 10 have Facebook accounts. She is against this, and explains that kids should not have a Facebook until they reach high school, and I couldn't agree more. I found it interesting that kids that young even want a Facebook account, I mean what would they even do on Facebook? What's controversial is the fact that other parents allow their children to have Facebooks at this very young age. Why do children want Facebooks at this age? They can't do anything with them.

One Ad that I get a lot on my page is an Ad dealing with cheap student apartments in Charlotte. I guess I'm getting these ads because I'm obviously a college student in the Charlotte area. I have been looking at possible apartment options over the summer, so that's probably a reason why that ad is on my page often.

Another Ad that I've noticed on my page is an ad about cleveland t-shirts. The only reason I can come up with as to why this ad is on my page is because one of my best friends makes a lot of posts/statuses about Cleveland sports. He dogs Cleveland sports because they are terrible at everything, the thing is he's a die hard Cleveland fan. Maybe this ad is on my page because I comment on his statuses that rag on the Cavs and Browns.

An ad that also shows up on my page a lot is one that advertises the renting of textbooks. I've checked out different websites that rent college textbooks to students and that has to be the reason that this particular ad has been on my page.

This article written by Brianna Gays deals with Facebook causing their users to experience sadness. Gays writes about how when Facebook users check their friends profiles they focus on that friends positive experiences. Apparently, speaking for other users of Facebook, we focus only on the positive things that are going on in our friend's lives, and underestimate the bad experiences they go through. This causes us to think more negativily about our own lives, which forces us to experience sadness. We look at what our friends are doing and basically ask ourselves why they are happy, and why we are not as happy as them. We do this, when in reality we are just as happy. This theory was proven by a study conducted at Stanford University.
